Entering my building in Rome is a practice in patience for anyone who is not my personal guards. As you step foot on the marble floors, you have already gone through a metal detector and been scanned for facial recognition. If you make it through to the elevator, you’re then met with a palm scanner that only works with mine, Lorenzo’s, Alto’s, and Boian’s palm. If some asshole thinks he can take one of my guys and force him to gain access to my penthouse, all my man has to do is use the opposite hand to send a warning to the system that will notify me immediately. If the guy decides to relieve my man of his hand, the pulse detector on the scanner will be alerted to the lack of pulse and shut down immediately. If, after all that, he makes it upstairs, he will be met with a bomb-proof door with reinforced steel under the drywall on either side.

In short, the fucker would have gone through a lot for nothing.

“Alto, I want you to keep in contact with Camil to make sure Saturday’s event goes smoothly. I don’t want any fuck ups.”

“Of course, Don Calvano.”

With Alto keeping tabs on Greta and the event, I can focus on finding the bastards tainting my streets with their very presence.

“Signore, my contact informed me there are currently two individuals battling for a seat in the Palace of Justice. Tommaso Gallo and Mattia Lastra both show clean on paper, but I have my man searching for any skeletons,” Lorenzo assures me.

“Good, I want the names of their wives, kids, and where they go to school. I want every bit of leverage I can use against them.”

“Sì,” Lorenzo answers and heads to the formal dining room to relay my orders to his man.

“Alright, men, let’s find these scorpioni. We find the bugs; we find the serpente.”

Another night comes and goes, and with it comes the screams of the men who are mere pawns in this dirty game of chess. Each man gives up his superior, but never Vipera. Whoever the man is, he’s smart and keeps to the shadows, never to be seen in person. The little information we do pull from the assholes we torture is that the Viper only speaks to one man, and that man hands out the Viper’s orders. None can confirm that the messenger is of political persuasion or not. We have more information than before, but not enough.

“The police have to be involved,” Boian grumbles where he stands propped against the basement wall where we are currently “interrogating” a scorpion. “The orders may have come from high up, but they had to have a cop on the payroll to keep the abductions quiet for as long as they did.”

As much as the thought pisses me off, I know Boian is right. “I thought we had most of those fuckers in our pocket?” I grit and turn my eyes to Alto in accusation. Alto is my man who keeps the authorities in line either by a bloody example or a generous payout.
